WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State managed 10 hits but went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in a 5-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers (3-7) stranded 12 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fourth and eighth innings.
The offensive output spoiled a brilliant start from redshirt senior
Grant Adler, who twirled 6.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts, allowing just three hits and two walks but settling for a no-decision.
Cal State Fullerton (2-8) finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the seventh when a ground ball to shortstop
Camden Johnson was misplayed, giving the Titans a 1-0 lead. They doubled it in the eighth when Matthew Bardowell's line drive to centerfield landed just in front of a diving
Kaleb Duncan for an RBI double, then Fullerton tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth with the help of two walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
The Titans got 3.2 scoreless innings from starter Derek Turner and 3.2 scoreless from reliever Jason Blood (1-1), who retired the first 11 men he faced before allowing three consecutive singles with one out in the eighth. That brought on closer Andrew Wright, who retired the next two Shockers and then pitched around a pair of singles in the ninth to earn his second save.
Kam Durnin led Wichita State with three hits, while
Josh Livingston added two for WSU. Cal State Fullerton was led by three knocks from Eli Lopez and two off the bench from Bardowell.
The Shockers and Titans conclude the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
