Shockers Runner-Up at Big Red Invite

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Wichita State added to their impressive spring with a second-place finish at the Big Red Invite at Hollywood Bowl. The Shockers went 8-3 over the tournament's three days, highlighted by a pair of victories of #4 Arkansas State.

Senior Mary Orf was named Tournament MVP with a 232.25 average, while Piper Reams (211.0 - 7th) and Ashtyn Woods (207.25 - 9th) joined Orf in the top 10.

WSU (68-31) posted a 4-1 showing in Friday's Baker games, taking down Central Missouri twice in addition to wins over Elmhurst and Quincy. The lone defeat came at the hands of #25 Valparaiso (1,175-1,110), who set a program record with the 1,175 Baker match. Wichita State put up at least 1,000 in each of their four traditional matches on Saturday, suffering a close 1,104-1,077 defeat to #1 Nebraska before bouncing back with wins over #4 Arkansas State (1,052-953), #13 McKendree (1,046-1,026), and Elmhurst (1,028-930). As a result, Wichita State secured the #2 seed heading into bracket play on Sunday and a rematch with the Red Wolves.

The Shockers crushed the defending NCAA runner-up, 4-0 (237-204, 216-168, 230-167, 228-168) to advance to the bracket final against the host Huskers. The two teams traded wins in each of the first four games to reach 2-2 before the Huskers hung on for a 223-212 victory in game five to grab control and put the match away in the subsequent game, 227-169.

Wichita State finished second technically via total pinfall, posting a 208.7 average behind only Nebraska's 218.5.

Shocker individuals will compete in the Intercollegiate Singles Championships in Las Vegas beginning on March 7, before returning to team play on March 14 for the Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tennessee in the final tournament of the regular season.
