WICHITA, Kan.  – Wichita State needed five extra minutes to record its biggest win of the season, upsetting No. 14 Memphis, 84-79, in Charles Koch Arena Sunday afternoon.
Wichita State (15-10, 5-7) snapped a 10-game losing streak vs. ranked opponents with the victory. The Shockers last defeated a Top 25 team nearly four years ago to the day on Feb. 18, 2021 vs. No. 6 Houston.
The Shockers continued their strong play of late, winning their fourth straight game after starting conference play 1-7. Wichita State is 2-0 in overtime games this season.
Quincy Ballard scored a team-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and four blocks on 7-of-8 shooting.
Corey Washington picked up his second straight double-double and seventh of the season behind 18 points and 15 rebounds.
The standout performance belonged to
Bijan Cortes, however. Cortes played his best game in a Shocker uniform, tallying 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. No points were bigger than his three-pointer in overtime that gave Wichita State the lead for good with 1:10 remaining.
Xavier Bell was perfect at the line, going 8-for-8 with 12 points, while battling foul trouble for much of the game.
Harlond Beverly added 11 points and six assists.
Former Shocker
Colby Rogers made his return to the Roundhouse and finished with just six points on 2-of-8 shooting.
Wichita State was dominant on the glass, outrebounding the Tigers by nine. The Shockers grabbed a season-high 54 rebounds one game after pulling down 50 against UTSA. Wichita State has outrebounded its last four opponents, 185-125 (+60).
In the first meeting in Memphis, Wichita State committed a season-high 22 turnovers. Today, they had just eight.
Wichita State finished the game just 4-of-21 from beyond the arc, while Memphis went 10-for-26.
Neither team shot particularly well over the first 20 minutes, both below the 33 percent mark, but Wichita State's rebounding was the difference in helping the Shockers take a 32-28 lead into halftime. At the half Wichita State was plus-10 on the boards, including 11 offensive rebounds.
Washington had a first half double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He had 33 percent of the team's rebounds by himself.
The Tigers led by six at the midway point of the half, but a 7-0 run pulled the Shockers back in it. Memphis would jump back in front by four only to see Wichita State score 11 straight to take its largest lead with only 1:48 left until halftime. A Memphis three-point play with just 5.8 seconds left made it a four-point game at the half.
After a neck-and-neck first 8:00 minutes of the second half, Memphis grabbed its largest lead, 53-45, following back-to-back three-pointers from PJ Carter.
Wichita State was not about to let it get out of hand, immediately bouncing back with eight unanswered behind back-to-back
Ronnie DeGray III scores and a Ballard alley-oop.
Neither team would lead by more than four over the next 7:00 minutes until a Memphis breakaway dunk from Tyrese Hunter put the Tigers up 71-67 with only 38 seconds to go.
A Beverly floater cut it to 71-69 which then led to a Memphis turnover on the inbounds play, giving Wichita State life with 32 seconds to play. DeGray would end up grabbing one of his three offensive rebounds and go to the line for a chance to tie after a Memphis foul on the rebound.
Just a 63 percent free throw shooter on the season, DeGray calmly stepped to the stripe and swished both to tie the game at 71.
Following a Memphis timeout, the Tigers would have the final shot to win in it in regulation. After being stifled for the first 15 seconds of the play, the ball found its way to Rogers for a game-winning stepback jumper in front of the Memphis bench, but it would come up short sending the game to overtime.
To begin the extra session, Memphis quickly grabbed a four-point lead, all at the free throw line. Back-to-back scores from Ballard and Beverly tied the game at 75 with 2:04 remaining. A Moussa Cisse tip-in pushed the Tigers back in front by two, but it didn't take Wichita State long to answer. Cortes splashed in his only triple of the game to give Wichita State a 78-77 lead with 1:10 left.
They would not let the lead slip away this time. A Ballard block on one end led to a Washington layup to make it 80-77. Two Memphis free throws again cut it to one with 30 seconds still to play.
With 19 seconds left and holding a one-point lead, Washington would be sent to the line where he was just 3-for-8 on the day. The junior, with ice in his veins, drilled both to again make it a three-point game, 82-79.
An airballed Tyrese Hunter three-pointer gave the ball back to Wichita State with 6 seconds left and Bell going back to the line. Both free throws would swish through the net to seal the victory.
