Bowling Preview: Mid-Winter Invitational

JONESBORO, Ark. -- The #7-ranked Wichita State women's bowling team will once again test themselves against the nation's best this weekend at the Mid-Winter Invitational, hosted by Arkansas State at Hijinx Family Entertainment Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The tournament begins Friday, February 14 and concludes on Sunday, February 16.

The 16-team field features nine of the top ten teams and 13 of the top 17 teams in the latest NTCA Poll. The Shockers are scheduled to face three of the nation's top four teams over the first two days of competition.

#1 Nebraska, #2 Vanderbilt, #3 Jacksonville State, #4 Arkansas State, #5 Youngstown State, #7 Wichita State, #8 Sam Houston, #9 Stephen F. Austin, #10 Maryville. #11 Louisiana Tech, #13 McKendree, #14 Wisconsin-Whitewater, #17 UAB, Alabama State and Jackson State.

The schedule of the tournament is as follows:
  • Friday - Five Baker matches starting at 10:00 AM CT
  • Saturday - Five traditional matches starting at 9:25 AM CT
  • Sunday - Three best-of-seven Baker matches starting at 8:10 AM CT to determine final placings

Friday (Baker format)
  • Match 1 vs. #8 Sam Houston (lanes 29-30)
  • Match 2 vs. Jackson State (lanes 23-24)
  • Match 3 vs. #2 Vanderbilt (lanes 11-12)
  • Match 4 vs. #13 McKendree (lanes 27-28)
  • Match 5 vs. #4 Arkansas State (lanes 3-4)
Saturday (Traditional Format)
  • Match 6 vs. #17 UAB (lanes 19-20)
  • Match 7 vs. #11 Louisiana Tech (lanes 7-8)
  • Match 8 vs. #1 Nebraska (lanes 29-30)
  • Match 9 vs. #14 Wisconsin-Whitewater (lanes 11-12)
  • Match 10 is a bye, no opponent (lanes 23-24)

Baker matches are structured with five players combining to bowl one game, each bowling two frames. Player one bowls frames 1 and 6, player two bowls frames 2 and 7, player three bowls frames 3 and 8, player four bowls frames 4 and 9 and player 5 bowls frames 5 and 10. In traditional matches, five players each bowl an individual game, with all five games added together.

Last time out, Wichita State went 10-0 over the first two days of qualifying but suffered three close defeats in bracket play to settle for a fourth-place finish at the Flyer Classic. The Shockers stormed through the Baker and Traditional matches, besting #25 Valparaiso, Marian, Augustana, #9 Stephen F. Austin and Quincy on Friday before taking down Aurora, #2 Vanderbilt, #20 Tulane, #10 Maryville, and #6 North Carolina A&T on Saturday. WSU dropped a 4-2 decision to #3 Jacksonville State in the opening round of the bracket, followed by 4-3 losses to #6 North Carolina A&T and #1 Nebraska.
