Shockers Beat Bulldogs in Sweep

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team swept their way to a 7-0 win over the Drake Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at Genesis Rock Road.

The win for the Shockers bumps them to 2-2 on the year, while Drake falls to 2-2 with the loss. The win was the first 7-0 sweep for the Shockers in the Darragh Glavin era and the first since March 26, 2022. It was also Coach Glavin's first win over Drake at the helm of the Shockers.

Despite the overall result, doubles was competitive with all three courts being played out to decide the point. WSU's Vanja Hodzic and Ilias Worthington won first with a 6-2 win at court two, but it was offset by a 6-3 loss at court three by Zaid Al Mashni and Luca Mindrut, leaving Alejandro Jacome and Kristof Minarik to decide doubles. The standout Shocker team used a hot, 3-0 start in the match to boost themselves to a 6-3 win at court one, clinching the doubles point. Jacome and Minarik are now a perfect 4-0 on the season with the win.

In singles, the Shockers dominated early and often for the second straight day, winning the first set on all six courts.

Al Mashni avenged his singles loss on Saturday and doubles loss earlier in the match with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win at court five to make it 2-0 WSU.

Next, Minarik earned his sixth dual win of the year and second in singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win at court two, making it 3-0 Shockers.

True freshman Amir Milushev struck next, winning 6-1, 6-4 at court six to clinch the match for the Shockers. The win was Milushev's first-ever collegiate victory.

Playing the match out, Jacome earned his second win of the day, winning 6-3, 6-3 to extend the lead to 5-0.

Hodzic overcame a 4-3 deficit in his second set to win his match at court one, 6-3, 6-4.

Worthington sealed the sweep in a super tiebreak, winning 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (4), at court five to end the match with a 7-0 result for WSU.
