LINCOLN, Neb. – The Wichita State women's tennis team was narrowly defeated by the Washington State Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center, 5-2.

Washington State is now 5-0 on the year with the win. Wichita State falls to 1-3.

Doubles was a war that the Shockers would ultimately win.
Anne Knuettel and
Sati Aubakirova put together a strong 6-2 win at court three to give the Black and Yellow the early edge. Courts two and three were much closer, with
Xin Tong Wang and
Giorgia Roselli overcoming a 5-2 deficit to win 7-5 at court one, clinching doubles for the Shockers.Â

Singles was another highly competitive battle between the two WSU's. The Cougars struck first in singles, tying the match with a narrow 7-5, 6-4 win over Aubakirova at court six.

Knuettel capped off her strong day with a 7-5, 6-4 win at court five, giving the Shockers a 2-1 lead.

Later at court two, the Cougars again tied the match with another 7-5, 6-4 decision, this one over Roselli.

Washington State prevailed over
Theodora Chantava 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to take their first lead of the match, 3-2. A lead they ultimately would not relinquish, as they took down Wang at court one 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 to clinch the win, and followed it with a match ending 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over
Kristina Kudryavtseva at court four, giving the Cougars a 5-2 win.
