Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. – The Wichita State women's tennis team's late rally fell short on Friday evening, as they dropped their match to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 4-1, at Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Nebraska improves to 3-0 on the year with the home win. WSU is now 1-2 with both losses coming to Power Four opponents.
Nebraska sprinted to an early advantage in doubles, taking multi-game leads at courts two and three. These early leads were what decided the point, as
Anne Knuettel and
Sati Aubakirova fell 6-2 at court three, and
Theodora Chantava and
Kristina Kudryavtseva fell 6-4 at court two to give doubles to the Huskers.
Xin Tong Wang and
Giorgia Roselli's match at court one went unfinished, tied at five-all.
In singles, the Huskers again took an advantage by taking the first set on four of six singles courts. The blitz was too much to overcome for Wang and Aubakirova as the former fell, 6-4, 6-4 at court one, and the latter 6-3, 6-3 at court six.
Knuettel recorded what would be the lone Shocker match win of the day with a resounding 7-6 (3), 6-2 win at court five. Her first singles win of the spring season so far.
Down 3-1 in the match, Roselli, Chantava, and Kudryavtseva were left to decide the result, and all were heading to third sets, giving hope of a rally.
The hope was short-lived, as Roselli couldn't overcome an early deficit in set three, falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at court two, clinching and ending the match in favor of the hometown Huskers.
Next up, the Shockers play Washington State on Saturday at 1:00 PM CT in Lincoln.
