Openers
  • Wichita State women's tennis is set to begin its 16th season under the guidance of head coach, Colin Foster
  • Under Foster, the Shockers have a record of 10-5 in season openers
  • The Shockers have a record of 28-21 all-time in season openers in program history
  • In season openers played on the road, the Shockers are 5-17 all-time and are 3-4 under Coach Foster
Fall Success
  • Sophomore Xin Tong Wang made history made her mark in the Shocker history books in the fall season. 
  • In October, she became the first Shocker since 1983 to compete in the Central Region Singles Final, and in November, she became the first Shocker to make an appearance at nationals since 2019
  • Theodora Chantava and Giorgia Roselli represented the Shockers in doubles at the first annual AAC Fall Championships, where they made a run to the semifinals of the tournament
  • Roselli led the Shockers in singles wins in the fall with ten
  • Chantava, Roselli, and Kristina Kudryavtseva tied for the lead in doubles wins with five each
In the Rankings
  • After a fall campaign that saw her become the first Shocker to qualify for nationals since 2019, Wang is currently ranked No. 62 by the ITA in singles
  • Wang is also the first Shocker to be ranked by the ITA since May 1, 2019, when Fatima Bizhukova was ranked No. 121
  • In doubles, Chantava and Roselli are currently ranked No. 91 in the ITA doubles rankings
  • Chantava and Roselli are the first Shockers to be ranked in doubles since Marta Bellucco and Sandra Honigova were ranked No. 23 on January 13, 2021
 
New Faces
  • Two new players have joined the Shocker roster from last season in true freshman Sati Aubakirova and Miami transfer Tatyana Nikolenko
  • Coach Foster will be joined by two new assistant coaches this season in Arianna Raga who came to Wichita State after guiding the Cowley Tigers to an NJCAA Division I National Championship and Maya Tahan who just wrapped up her collegiate playing career at Miami and LSU
 
Oklahoma Notes
  • The Sooners are in their ninth year under head coach, Audra Cohen
  • Oklahoma is ranked No. 16 in the ITA Preseason Poll
  • Last season, OU went 19-7, reaching the second round of regionals, before falling to the eventual national champion, Texas A&M
  • Oklahoma was ranked No. 19 in the last season's final ITA poll
  • Four Sooners aree currently ranked in singles, Julia Garcia Ruiz is No. 14, Alina Shcherbinina is No. 43, Emma Staker is No. 66, and Ava Catanzarite is No. 68
  • Two Sooner doubles pairings are ranked. Cara Mester and Shcherbinina aree No. 28 and Chloe Noel and Garcia Ruiz are No. 30
Series History vs. Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma leads the all-time series with Wichita State 38-6
  • Wichita State has not won in the series since April 1, 2018, where they beat the Sooners in Norman, 5-2
  • Under Foster, the Shockers are 2-10 against OU
  • Last year, Oklahoma defeated Wichita State 6-1 in Norman on January 12
Wyoming Notes
  • The Cowgirls are in their 15th year under head coach, Dean Clower
  • Wyoming has put up one of the best two-year stretches in program history across the last two seasons. They have gone a combined 32-22 across the last two years and have accepted bids to the Universal Tennis NIT Championship each year
  • The Cowgirls have started the year 0-4 with losses to Tulsa, LA Tech, Arkansas State, and Oklahoma State 
 
Series History vs. Wyoming
  • Wichita State leads the all-time series against Wyoming 5-2
  • The Shockers are 2-1 against the Cowgirls under Coach Foster
  • The teams last met on February 17, 2018, where the Shockers won 4-0 in Lincoln, Nebraska
Next Up
The Shockers travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the hometown Cornhuskers on January 24 at 4:00 PM and will play a neutral match in Lincoln against Washington State the following day at 1:00 PM.
