Support Women's Athletics for National Girls and Women in Sports Day

1/16/2025 10:00:00 AM

On National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), Wichita State University Athletics is proud to celebrate the achievements of girls and women in athletics. Every day, our female student-athletes utilize the power of practice, preparation and competition to grow personally and professionally.

Our women's programs and female student-athletes are no strangers to success. Since joining the American Athletic Conference, softball has had five AAC Players of the Year (Sydney McKinney twice, Addie Barnard, Mackenzie Wright, CC Wong) and has made the NCAA Tournament four of the last six seasons (not including 2020 when the season was canceled). Softball has also had four All-Americans in program history, all within the last four years and won AAC Regular Season Championships in 2021 and 2023.

Shocker Volleyball is in the midst of its longest run of sustained success since joining The American in 2017. The Shockers have put together three consecutive postseason appearances, including an NIVC championship in 2023 and an American Athletic Conference Tournament title this past season. Wichita State swept all three matches of the competition at Charles Koch Arena to reach the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time in program history. The Shockers have produced 19 All-Conference honorees during their AAC tenure, including First Team selections Morgan Stout and Izzi Strand this past season. Stout also became the first Shocker selection in the Pro Volleyball Federation draft.

Shocker Bowling is 22-16 through their first three tournaments of NCAA competition despite facing the nation's toughest schedule. The Shockers logged a second-place finish at the season-opening Penguin Classic, sixth place at the SFA Ladyjack Classic and seventh at the Colonial Lanes Classic, plus a title at the Mid-States Championships that is classified as an exhibition. Along the way, WSU picked up victories against some of the nation's top programs, including #1 Vanderbilt, #3 Nebraska, #4 Youngstown State, #6 Stephen F. Austin, #8 Sam Houston and #9 Maryville.

In track and field and cross country, since joining the American WSU has produced two All-Americans, two AAC team championships, 14 AAC individual conference champions and nine new school records. Women's basketball has produced six all-conference players and one all-freshman team selection. Taryn Torgerson won the AAC Individual Championship for women's golf in 2018 and Xin Tong Wang was a NCAA Tournament singles qualifier for women's tennis in 2024.

Our women's programs and student-athletes have done all this while achieving at record levels in the classroom, with all-time highs in GPA, Graduation Success Rate (GSR), and Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Please consider contributing to an Athletics Women's Fund in honor of our female student-athletes' accomplishments and to position Wichita State for even greater success in women's athletics in the years ahead. Your donation will directly impact the academic and athletic experience of current and future Shocker student-athletes. Please visit the NGWSD Campaign Page to make your gift.
