Wang’s Run Ends in Qualifiers at ITA All-Americans

CARY, N.C. – Shocker women's tennis sophomore Xin Tong Wang fell in three sets to Virginia's Melodie Collard on Tuesday afternoon, ending her run at the 2024 ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina.

Wang finishes 4-1 in North Carolina, defeating four power four school opponents across pre-qualifiers and qualifiers, before ultimately falling on Tuesday to Collard in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Head women's tennis coach Colin Foster was happy with Wang's results from the week.

"It was a great week for Xin Tong," said Foster. "She has consistently proved over the last year that she can play with anyone in college tennis, and she did so again this week."

She is the first Shocker since 2009 to advance out of the pre-qualifying draw at All-Americans, joining Lutfiana Budiharto, who fell in the first round of qualifiers. She is the first Shocker to win multiple matches at All-Americans in any bracket since Fatima Bizhukova won two matches in the 2017 pre-qualifiers.

"Xin Tong fought through some very tight matches and found ways to win which shows a lot of grit and resilience," said Foster. "She should gain even more confidence from this week, and she'll be more and more comfortable in this level of matches going forward."

Wang and the rest of the Shockers next action will be at the ITA Central Region Championships October 9-12 at Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tennessee.
