Shockers Bested by #5 Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Wichita State lost in straight sets to #5 Nebraska on Saturday afternoon at Bob Devaney Sports Center, 13-25, 12-25, 12-25.

The Shockers (3-6) never led in the contest and were unable to slow down the potent Husker offense, which hit .477 for the match and committed just eight errors. Wichita State was held to an .096 clip.

Harper Murray finished with a match-high 14 kills on 24 swings, one of three Nebraska players with double-digit kills.

Wichita State was within 6-4 early in the opening frame after a Murray attack error, but Nebraska outscored the Shockers 11-4 to create breathing room. Taylor Landfair led the way for the Huskers with five kills in the set, putting Nebraska in position to put the set away with a 3-0 run capped off by a Murray service ace.

The Huskers (8-1) unleashed another big run in the second set, lengthening a 7-4 lead out to 19-7. Nebraska hitters had 16 kills on 26 swings in the stanza with no attack errors; Emerson Wilford delivered an excellent frame for Wichita State with six kills on nine errorless attempts. Another 3-0 Nebraska run capped off by a service ace, this time from Merritt Beason, gave the Huskers a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

WSU and Nebraska traded points in the early stages of the third set, as a Sarah Barham termination made it 10-8 Huskers. But Wichita State was unable to slow the Big Red momentum, as Nebraska rattled off nine of the next ten points and cruised to the victory behind the arm of Andi Jackson, who scored on all six of her attempts including the final two of the match.

Wilford was the only Shocker in double-figures with 12 kills. Annalie Heliste recorded a match-high 13 digs and Izzi Strand handed out 24 assists in defeat.

The Shockers return to the friendly confines of Charles Koch Arena for the Shocker Volleyball Classic next week. WSU opens the tournament against Cal Poly on Thursday evening with first serve scheduled for 7:00 pm.
