WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State student-athletes recorded the second-highest spring semester cumulative grade-point average in school history with a 3.399 for the Spring 2024 semester. It was also the 38
th-consecutive semester of earning higher than a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average department wide.
In August of 2022, Wichita State Athletics established a bold and aggressive set of five-year strategic objectives. Academically - beginning the Fall of 2022 semester and concluding the Spring of 2027 semester - Wichita State Athletics aspires to achieve a department-wide 3.0 GPA all 10 semesters, a department-wide 3.30 GPA five out of the next 10 semesters – four of which have already been accomplished - and a department-wide 3.40 GPA once out of the next 10 semesters, a goal that has already been accomplished twice. The Spring of 2024 accomplished two of these objectives and barely missed on the third.
Â
"Congratulations and sincere thanks to our student-athletes, coaches, and tremendous support staff on this remarkable accomplishment," said Director of Athletics Kevin Saal. "Unprecedented academic achievement will continue to be a priority for our department moving forward. This semester's 3.39971519 illustrates not only our department's commitment to character/integrity, it also speaks to an unrivaled attention to detail. Given we fell just a few letter grades short (out of 1,000+ courses taken by Shocker student-athletes) of our loftiest 3.4 GPA goal, we will double our efforts and ensure all in our department understand the importance of every day, every assignment, every course, every test and every final grade."
Â
Of the 198 student-athletes on the honor roll (above a 3.0), 46 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA, while 135 were named to the Dean's List (3.5 GPA) and 179 were named Shocker Scholars (3.2 GPA).  Eighty percent of student-athletes were above a 3.0 GPA.Â
Â
"The Wichita State and Shocker Athletics community has always understood the importance of the Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization (SASO) to our educational mission," Saal said. "Our student-athletes are fifty-percent first-generation college students. They are doing something that has never been done before in their families, and likely would not be possible without the athletics scholarships afforded through SASO. In that way, SASO supporters are ushering generational and transformational change within the current and future families of today's Shocker student-athletes."
