Bulls Rally Past Shockers to Complete Sweep

TAMPA, Fla. -- South Florida scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and once more in the bottom of the tenth to complete the sweep over Wichita State with a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at USF Baseball Stadium.

Wichita State (19-13, 5-4) led 2-0 into the ninth inning behind a great start from freshman Tommy LaPour and 2.1 perfect innings in relief from Hunter Holmes. But Holmes walked the leadoff man to begin the ninth, and a single and double followed against closer Nate Adler to tie the game at 2-2. Adler escaped the jam with the game still tied, but allowed all four men he faced in the tenth to reach, including a walk-off squeeze bunt from pinch-hitter Kohl Robertson that secured the win for South Florida (19-13, 6-3).

The late rally spoiled another great outing from LaPour, who struck out seven over 5.2 scoreless innings while allowing seven hits and three walks. He turned the ball over to Holmes in the sixth, who retired the first seven men he faced before faltering to begin the ninth. Adler (1-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season while South Florida closer Chandler Dorsey (1-1) earned his first win by retiring the only man he faced in the top of the tenth.

The only scoring in the first eight frames came as part of a two-run top of the fifth for Wichita State. An RBI double from Kam Durnin broke the scoreless deadlock and later in the inning Camden Johnson laid down a bunt single to score Durnin for a 2-0 lead. The Shockers stranded five men in scoring position over the final five innings.

Durnin and Millan each recorded two hits apiece to lead the Shockers offensively.

Wichita State returns to action on Tuesday night at Riverfront Stadium against Oklahoma State. First pitch of the midweek contest is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
