WICHITA, Kan. -- Oklahoma scored seven runs over the final two innings to turn a close game into a comfortable 11-2 win over Wichita State on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
The Sooners (16-12) led 4-1 entering the top of the eighth but struck for four runs in the inning on a catcher balk, a wild pitch, a Michael Snyder RBI double and a pickoff. Then Oklahoma tacked on three more runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double from Bryce Madron.
The outcome was largely determined in the sixth and seventh innings when Wichita State (18-10) had two big opportunities to cut into the Oklahoma lead. In the sixth, the Shockers loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk, but
Mauricio Millan grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. In the seventh, two more singles and a ground out put runners at second and third with two outs for
Dayvin Johnson, who struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch from Oklahoma reliever Carson Atwood.
Oklahoma built their lead with a pair of runs in the second and third innings, taking advantage of a combined seven walks in the first three frames from Shocker pitching. Wichita State pitchers walked 13 on the day.
The Shockers scored in the bottom of the third when
Kam Durnin and Johnson singled and a passed ball allowed Durnin to race home from third, slicing the Oklahoma lead to 4-1. WSU did not score again until the ninth when Durnin singled home
Lane Haworth, the third hit of the game for Durnin.
Grant Stevens (5-0) earned the win in a predetermined split for Oklahoma, tossing two shutout innings. Wichita State starter
Daniel Zang (2-2) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned over one-plus inning of work. The Shockers used nine pitchers on the evening, including the first appearance on the mound for
Brayden Luikart, who recorded the final two outs in the top of the ninth.
The Shockers are back in action on Wednesday night against Kansas. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
