STILLWATER, Okla. – Shorthanded Wichita State took the fourth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls to extra innings before falling, 4-3, in the 8th on a walk-off single Wednesday night.
All six of Wichita State's losses have come against ranked teams, falling to 9-6 this season and 2-6 vs. Top 25 opponents. The Shockers are 1-2 in extra-inning games.
Bailey Urban and
Lainee Brown both had a pair of hits on the night when the Shockers had just five as a team.
Addison Barnard recorded the other hit on a deep single down the left field line.
Alex Aguilar received a no decision in her best start of the season. She went 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk.
Chloe Barber (4-2) came in out of the bullpen in the sixth and was saddled with the tough luck loss. She allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five in 2.1 innings.
It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that a run came across for either team. The Cowgirls grabbed a 1-0 lead on a sac fly that was inches away from being an inning-ending double play. Barnard caught a shallow fly ball and fired a perfect throw home but the tag was just late.
In the next half inning Wichita State had its own answer. After loading the bases with one out, Brown hit a high chopper back to Lexi Kilfoyl in the circle who fired a high throw over the head of the OSU catcher, allowing the tying run to come home. The very next batter,
Mila Seaton, hit a grounder to second who proceeded to bobble it and by the time she picked it up and threw home the go-ahead run had already scored. A pinch hit, bases loaded walk from
Sophie Johnson made it 3-1 to finish the top of the sixth.
Oklahoma State came right back with a pair in the home half to tie the game. A two-run triple with two outs made it a 3-3 game.
A leadoff single and a throwing error had the Cowgirls in business to start the bottom of the eighth. After a wild pitch moved her to third with no outs, Barber proceeded to strike out the next two hitters. Needing just one more out to escape the jam and send the game to the ninth, Rosie Davis laced the game-winning single through the right side to give the Cowgirls the walk-off win.
