WICHITA, Kan. -- Jordan Rogers beat out a two-run, infield single with two outs in the seventh and three Wichita State relievers combined for five scoreless innings as the Shockers bested Rice 7-5 on Thursday night at Eck Stadium.
With the game tied at 5-5 in the seventh, the Shockers loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch sandwiched around a pair of outs. Rogers quickly fell into an 0-2 hole against reliever Tom Vincent, then smashed a hard ground ball up the middle that was gloved by a diving Jack Riedel at shortstop. Riedel's throw to first was not in time to get Rogers and
Camden Johnson raced all the way around from second in the process to give the Shockers a 7-5 lead.
The Shocker bullpen made the lead stand up, getting excellent performances from
Jack Mount (2.2 innings, one hit),
Hunter Holmes (1.1 innings, three strikeouts) and
Nate Adler, who pitched around a one-out walk and two-out single to notch his fifth save by striking out three in the ninth. Holmes (1-1) earned his first win as a Shocker.
Wichita State (16-9, 3-1) sprinted to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to three consecutive hit by pitches, the latter two of which came with the bases loaded to drive in runs. A
Josh Livingston sacrifice fly and
Mauricio Millan RBI single added two more in the frame for an early cushion.
Rice (9-17, 1-3) erased it and then some with one run in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth against WSU starter
Brady Hamilton. The Owls got a two-run homer from Riedel and a go-ahead solo shot from Eric Correa to take a 5-4 lead in the fourth.
Another bases-loaded hit by pitch tied the game in the bottom of the inning. The Shockers were hit six times, matching the program record set earlier this season against Iowa.
Derek Williams was plunked twice with the bases loaded.
Rice reliever Ryland Urbanczyk (1-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs over 3.1 innings.
Dayvin Johnson led the Shockers offensively with a 3-for-3 night in addition to two walks.
Camden Johnson,
Mauricio Millan and
Kam Durnin each notched a pair of hits as the Shockers finished with 11 as a team.
The Shockers and Owls continue the series on Friday morning. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 11:00 am as part of Kids Day at the ballpark.
