Shockers Run-Rule ECU, Sweep Series

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Wichita State scored three runs in the first and never looked back in a 9-1 win in five innings at East Carolina Sunday afternoon.

Wichita State (13-10, 4-2) completed its first series sweep of the season and moved its win streak vs. the Pirates to 10 in a row.

Taylor Sedlacek finished her red-hot weekend with another multi-hit game and her third home run of the series. In three games vs. the Pirates the sophomore had three home runs and nine RBI.

CC Wong racked up three more hits, including a double and two RBI. Sophie Johnson hit her second career home run and Jessica Garcia drove in two on a double.

Lauren Howell (2-1) tied a career high with seven strikeouts in the complete game win. She allowed just one run on three hits.

For the third straight game Wichita State wasted no time putting runs on the board. The Shockers scored three in the top of the first on an Urban single and ECU error, Sedlacek RBI single and Caroline Tallent sac fly. Wichita State scored 10 runs in the first innings of the three games in Greenville.

After making a spectacular diving catch on a bunt attempt in the bottom of the second, Garcia then used the bat to add some insurance in the top of the third. With two outs Garcia drove in a pair of runs on a double off the wall to put Wichita State up 5-0.

East Carolina broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch after loading the bases on a single and two walks.

Wichita State immediately got that run back in the top of the fifth on Sedlacek's leadoff solo home run. Two batters later, Johnson crushed a solo shot of her own to make it 7-1. Back-to-back walks from Garcia and Krystin Nelson paved the way for Wong. Her third and final hit, a double, drove in both runs putting the mercy rule in play.
