WICHITA, Kan. -- The combination of three Wichita State pitchers held Long Beach State to just four hits as the Shockers claimed the series with an 8-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
It's the first series win for Wichita State against Long Beach State since the 2009 season when the Shockers also took two of three.
The Shockers (9-5) finished with just four hits of their own, but took advantage of five walks, four hit by pitches, four wild pitches and two passed balls to score in five of the final six innings. On the mound,
Tommy LaPour,
Tyler Dobbs and
Nate Adler kept the Dirtbags (10-3-1) in check, issuing two walks and allowing only one single over the final five innings of work.
Solo home runs from Kyle Ashworth and John Newman Jr. gave Long Beach State a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the Shockers drew level on a
Josh Livingston sacrifice fly and then took the lead in the fifth via a
Derek Williams RBI single. A run-scoring fielder's choice grounder from
Dayvin Johnson and a passed ball later in the inning that scored Johnson gave the Shockers a 5-2 lead heading to the sixth.
Wichita State took advantage of more Long Beach State charity in the sixth.
Seth Stroh reached first base safely on a strikeout that went to the backstop, then
Mauricio Millan hit a grounder to short that should have been a double play but was fumbled by the Dirtbags Adrian Lopez to put men at first and second. A wild pitch advanced both 90 feet, and
Camden Johnson took advantage with a sacrifice fly to left that made it 6-2.
Camden Johnson put the finishing touches on the win with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth, giving the freshman four RBI on the day.
Adler made sure there was little drama the rest of the way, firing three hitless, scoreless innings to nail down his fourth save. Dobbs (2-1) earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings after LaPour worked the first 4.2 frames.
Alexander Mihalakis (0-1) took the loss for Long Beach State, allowing three runs while recording just one out.
The Shockers continue the homestand by welcoming Nebraska for a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch of Tuesday's series opener is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
