DALLAS – The Wichita State women's tennis team fell on the road to the Mustangs of SMU, 0-4 on Friday afternoon at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
Â
The Shockers (5-4) saw their two-match winning streak come to an end, while SMU (3-4) has now won back-to-back matches.
Â
"It was a very competitive match despite the final score line," head coach
Colin Foster said. "We played well in doubles, but just came up short and had some close first sets in singles that didn't go our way."
Â
The Mavericks took a hotly contested doubles point after defeating
Natsumi Kurahashi and
Xin Tong Wang at court one, 7-5, and
Giorgia Roselli and
Theodora Chantava 6-3 at court three, to snag the always important point.Â
Â
In singles, Wang was the only Shocker to win the first set, putting the team in an early hole across the board.
Â
Kristina Kudryavtseva fell first in singles at court three, losing 6-4, 6-4 making it 2-0 SMU.
Â
Anne Knuettel would drop her match 6-3, 7-5 at court four, putting the Mustangs on the doorstep of victory.
Â
SMU would break open that door with a tight win over
Giorgia Roselli at court six, 7-6, 6-4, clinching and ending the match 4-0 in favor of the Mustangs.
Â
As coach Foster said, in spite of the 4-0 score line, the match was very close, with the match being decided by just a few points in both singles and doubles.
Â
"At the end of singles, we really did well fighting until the end," said Foster. "We saved a lot of match points on multiple courts, but it was just too big of a hole to dig out of."
Â
The Shockers will hurry home to gear up for a home match against the Fordham Rams on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM at the Wichita Country Club.
