Shockers Rally for Comeback Win vs. No. 20 South Carolina

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Wichita State scored four runs in the top of the seventh to complete a come-from-behind 6-5 win over No. 20 South Carolina on the second day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.

For the third time in two days Wichita State went up against a Top 25 team, and this time came out on the right side of the scoreboard. The Shockers nearly completed a comeback win against No. 20 Auburn last night before falling in extra innings.

Wichita State has four ranked wins over the last two seasons.

The top of the order provided a majority of the damage for the offense. Of Wichita State's 12 hits, 10 of them came from the first four in the lineup.

CC Wong had another strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Sami Hood had a career-high three hits to go with two runs and an RBI. Addison Barnard went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Bailey Urban drove in two on a single and a double.

Krystin Nelson and Sydney Zenon were the only other Shockers to collect a hit.

It also marked the third straight day facing an All-American in the circle. Stanford transfer Alana Vawter shut out the Shockers last season in Wichita, but the Shockers were able to score five runs on 10 hits this time around.

Freshman Chloe Barber got the nod to start for Wichita State, throwing 5.0 innings total. She re-entered in the seventh to record her first career save. In all she struck out eight, while allowing four runs on four hits and five walks. Alison Cooper threw an inning of relief, as did Alex Aguilar. Aguilar finished as the pitcher on record, earning her second win of the season.

Barber struck out the first four hitters she faced to begin the game, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the second. A double, single, walk and another double resulted in three runs for the Gamecocks to take an early 3-0 lead.

A Hood RBI single got the Shockers on the board in the next half inning, cutting the deficit to two.

The Gamecocks pushed the margin back to three in the fifth on an RBI double.

Down to their final three outs, Nelson started the seventh inning rally on a leadoff single down the third base line. Wong followed with a double to put runners on second and third for Barnard. The senior All-American delivered a two-run single, cutting the deficit to one, 5-4.

Urban, the very next Shocker in the lineup, wasted no time in putting Wichita State in front for the first time of the tournament. The redshirt senior laced a two-run double over the head of the left fielder to put Wichita State on top, 6-5.

The next three Shockers would go down in order, sending the game to the bottom of the seventh.

South Carolina wouldn't just go down without a fight. A leadoff double and a hit by pitch put their first two on base. After a sac bunt moved the runners to second and third with only one out, Wichita State brought the freshman Barber back in to finish the deal.

And the freshman delivered. A walk loaded the bases, which turned out huge because the next batter hit a grounder to Sydney Zenon at first, who fired a throw home to cut down the tying run. After the play was over the South Carolina hitter, Zoe Laneaux, vacated first base and went to the dugout presumably thinking the out at home was the third out. So, essentially Wichita State got two outs on the play, securing the dramatic win.
