GREENSVILLE, N.C. – Wichita State suffered its eighth straight road loss, falling 68-55, at East Carolina Thursday night.
Wichita State (10-15, 2-10) also lost for the first time ever in Greenville against the Pirates. They entered the night 3-0.
Colby Rogers was just 5-for-18 from the field and 2-of-10 from beyond the arc, finishing with a team-high 16 points.
Harlond Beverly added 12 points and five rebounds.
Wichita State finished the game just 4-of-21 from three-point range and shot 38 percent overall. After a scorching first half, East Carolina shot 32 percent after halftime, but did enough to keep the Shocker offense out of rhythm. The Pirates finished at 45 percent from the field and 7-of-19 from long range.
Entering the game, ECU ranked near the bottom of the NCAA in rebounding but won the board battle, 33-30.
Fourteen Wichita State turnovers also led to 15 ECU points, while the Shockers only scored six off 11 Pirate miscues.
Just over 8:00 minutes into the game Wichita State grabbed a six-point lead, 17-11, but turnovers and empty possessions allowed the Pirates to get hot. A 16-2 ECU run gave the Pirates a 27-19 lead, forcing a Wichita State timeout with 7:01 left in the half.
Brandon Johnson (10) and RJ Felton (9) combined for 19 points, equaling the Shockers by themselves.
The promising start to the game quickly went the opposite direction. ECU outscored the Shockers 27-10 over the final 11:40 to take a 38-27 lead into the half. The Pirates shot 59 percent from the field and forced eight Wichita State turnovers.
Wichita State attempted 15 three-pointers, connecting on only three. They shot just 36 percent overall. Rogers (8), Beverly (8) and Ridgnal (7) combined for 23 of Wichita State's 27 points.
East Carolina's lead quickly ballooned to 16 barely 2:00 minutes into the second half.
Five straight for the Shockers made it a 10-point game only to see ECU push it right back to 17 with 11:49 to go.
Wichita State made one last push behind a 7-0 run, but it wouldn't be enough. The Shockers trailed by double digits the entire second half.
