Efficient Offensive Attack Propels Shockers to 96-87 Win over ETSU

WICHITA, Kan.  – Wichita State's offense was operating like a well-oiled machine Saturday night in a 96-87 win over East Tennessee State, setting season highs in points and field goal percentage.

Wichita State moved to 8-1 for the first time since 2019 with the win.

Offensively, Wichita State shot 54.7 percent from the field (35-for-64), 42.9 percent (9-for-21) and 81.0 percent (17-for-21) from the free throw line.

Justin Hill recorded his second 20-point game of the season with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Corey Washington picked up his first double-double of the season behind 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Harlond Beverly chipped in 14 points and four assists and Xavier Bell added 13 points and five rebounds.

Bijan Cortes dished out a career-high eight assists to go with nine points. Quincy Ballard blocked a season-high five shots, while adding nine points and six rebounds.

One of the better offensive rebounding teams in the country coming in, Wichita State held ETSU to 11 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Bucs by seven.

Former Wichita State forward Jaden Seymour led all scorers with 25 points. He stuffed the stat sheet, adding nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks.

Behind Washington's red-hot first half, Wichita State got out to a blazing start. Washington scored seven of the team's first 10 points, pushing the Shockers out to an early 10-3 lead.

Eight of Wichita State's nine three-pointers on the night came in the first half, as the Shockers took a 54-37 lead into halftime. A Bell three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer capped the team's best half of the season. The 54 first half points were a season high and they converted on 58.3 percent of their attempts in the first 20 minutes.

The Shockers pushed their lead to as many as 21 in the second half before ETSU started to climb back into the game.

ETSU slowly chipped away until making it a seven-point game, 86-79, with 4:24 remaining.

Needing an answer, Wichita State turned to Hill who poured in eight straight points for Wichita State to give the Shockers some breathing room at the 2:00 minute mark, 94-81.

After the two teams traded dunks, ETSU's fate was all but sealed.
