WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State forced Tulsa into 22 attack errors and hung on for their first home sweep of the 2024 season, besting the Golden Hurricane 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers advance to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament with the victory, where they will take on top-seeded South Florida at 2:00 pm CT. Wichita State has now beaten the Golden Hurricane 22 consecutive times in Wichita and 13 straight times overall.
It wasn't an easy night offensively for either team, as WSU (16-13) hit .193 and Tulsa (18-11) was held to a .109 clip. But the Shockers got a match-high 12 kills from
Morgan Stout, 11 from
Alyssa Gonzales and six timely aces to survive the slug fest.
Five of those six aces came in the first set to help the Shockers overcome a 19-14 deficit. A 5-0 run keyed by two aces from
Grace Hett brought Wichita State level at 19-19, and a few points later a Stout ace inched the Shockers in front, 21-20. Two Tulsa attack errors and a pair of Gonzales kills got Wichita State home with a 25-20 opening set win.
Another late surge got Wichita State across the line in set two. With the frame tied 21-apiece, the Golden Hurricane committed three consecutive attack errors to give the Shockers several set point opportunities with a 24-21 advantage. Regan Pendleton terminated for Tulsa to keep the Golden Hurricane alive, but on the ensuing point
Izzi Strand executed a perfectly placed setter dump to secure a 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers led the third set from wire-to-wire, but never managed to create comfortable separation as the lead swung back and forth from three to two for much of the stanza. After Tulsa trimmed the margin to one with a Jolana Smidlova kill that made it 23-22, Stout delivered more heroics with a kill of her own and a service ace to polish off the straight sets victory.
Wichita State managed just four blocks but got 17 digs from
Katie Galligan to aid the defensive effort. Strand handed out 28 assists in addition to four kills and six digs. Smidlova and Rachel Brown each tallied eight kills to lead the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa's Marta Pecalli finished with a match-high 19 digs.
