DENTON, Texas -- North Texas snapped their seven-match losing streak with a five-set win over Wichita State on Friday night, 25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 25-13, 9-15 at the UNT Volleyball Center.
The Shockers (15-12, 10-5) out-hit the Mean Green .370-.260, but allowed 10 North Texas aces and could not slow down Aryn Johnson, who finished with a match-high 19 kills.
Wichita State claimed the first of three very closely contested frames to open the night, committing just one attack error while racking up 16 kills to hit .517.
Morgan Stout had five kills on seven attempts to lead the way, but it was
Maddie Wilson who delivered the set-winner with Wichita State clinging to a 24-22 lead.
While WSU continued to swing it well in the second and third frames, they could not blunt the North Texas offensive. In set two, UNT bolted to an 8-2 lead that proved to be too deep a hole to overcome, though the Shockers did eventually get within one at 22-21 and 24-23. A Claire Dewine kill evened the match at one.
Dewine was the star of set three, scoring five times on six swings as North Texas hit .395. The Mean Green again seized an 8-2 advantage that helped fend off a late Wichita State charge; this time, WSU came all the way back to tie at 23-23 when Wilson and
Alyssa Gonzales combined on a block, but Dewine had two more kills and Coco Gillett provided the winning termination for a 2-1 lead.
It was all Shockers in the fourth set as WSU quickly turned a 9-7 edge into 21-10 using a 12-3 run. Stout and
Gracie Morrow each contributed four kills while Wilson and Gonzales chipped in with three as part of a .455 team effort offensively. North Texas committed eight attack errors in the set and finished at .051 as WSU forced a decisive fifth set.
The Shockers never led in set five, falling once more into an early hole as North Texas built a 6-3 lead. The potent WSU attack could not find their legs, mustering just five kills in the final stanza as the Mean Green pulled away and eventually sealed the five-set win on a Johnson termination.
Wilson finished one kill shy of her career high, hitting .652 with 16 kills on 23 swings. Stout added 15 at a .355 clip and both Gonzales and Morrow delivered 13.
Izzi Strand dished out 54 assists to go along with nine digs and four kills, while libero
Katie Galligan led all players with 18 digs.
WSU piled up 15 blocks, led by seven apiece from Stout and Wilson.
Wichita State finishes the regular season on Sunday afternoon against UTSA. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
