Shockers Soar Past Riverhawks in Exhibition

WICHITA – Wichita native Taylor Jameson led the Shockers to an 81-46 exhibition victory over Northeastern State Wednesday evening in Charles Koch Arena.

The graduate transfer put up 16 points and dished out four assists with zero turnovers in her first game in the black and yellow.

"It was an out-of-body experience," Jameson said. "As a kid, I always used to look up to the [Wichita State] players, so being able to finally put my uniform on and see my name on the back of the jersey meant a lot, and being able to do it in front of my family also meant a lot."

She shot 6-for-11 from the field and hit four threes in the wire-to-wire win in front of the home crowd.

Two other Shockers finished in double figures with Maimouna Sissoko recording 12 points and six rebounds and Jayla Murray tallying 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Wichita State shot 28-for-69 (.406) from the field and forced 31 turnovers, including two five-second violations, while holding Northeastern State to 15-for-44 (.341) from the field and 1-for-13 (.077) from three.

"Our defense is led by our point guard play, and Taylor kind of heads the defense with being able to hawk and harass the opposing team's point guard," head coach Terry Nooner said. "If you have a good point guard who can really guard the ball full court without fouling, you're going to have a really successful defense."

All 12 Shockers who were suited up scored at least one point with 10 players playing at least 10 minutes and the bench scoring 33 points.

"One of our strengths is the fact that we have a bunch of people who we feel like we can rely on," Nooner said. "We're super versatile."

Free throws hurt Wichita State throughout the game as the team shot just 17-for 37 (.459) from the line.

The Shockers out-rebounded the Riverhawks 43-42 with 20 offensive rebounds and 14 second-chance points.

Wichita State's official season opener is set for Monday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. in Charles Koch Arena.
