WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State won their fifth five-set match of the season on Friday night, surviving a marathon two-hour, 52-minute affair to take down Memphis 25-19, 25-18, 24-26, 25-27, 15-12 at Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers (11-10, 6-3) got a number of career-best performances, including
Morgan Stout (career-high 18 kills, 10 blocks),
Izzi Strand (career-high nine kills and 20 digs, 44 assists) and
Katie Galligan (19 digs). They needed every one of them to survive a feisty Memphis comeback that saw the Tigers win consecutive sets in extra points before the Shockers finally pulled away in the fifth.
Wichita State comfortably controlled the first two stanzas by stifling the Memphis attack. The Tigers (10-11, 4-5) hit -.044 in the first set and .111 in the second, committing 23 total attack errors as the Shockers rolled to a pair of wins. But set three was a different story, as Memphis snatched a quick 12-5 lead thanks to a long service run from Jordan Heatherly. Wichita State eventually battled all the way back to tie at 21-21, 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24, but the Tigers took advantage of a WSU service error and then got a block from Hannah Jones and Tiffany Snook to steal a 26-24 win and force a fourth set.
In what proved to be one of the closest sets of the season, neither side had a lead of more than two points at any time in the fourth. Wichita State eventually scratched their way to a match point chance when
Morgan Stout terminated to make it 25-24, but the Tigers responded with kills from Snook and Tabytha Toelke before
Emerson Wilford missed wide on a swing that sent the match to a decisive fifth frame.
After trading the first 10 points to reach 5-5, WSU got consecutive Stout kills to finally grab some momentum and a 7-5 lead. Stout then had a hand in three consecutive blocks, as the Shockers stretched their lead to 11-7 and forced a pair of Memphis timeouts. The Tigers got within two on four different occasions the rest of the way, but kills from
Alyssa Gonzales,
Sarah Barham and finally
Brooklyn Leggett sealed the deal in a 15-12 decision.
In addition to Stout's 18 kills, the Shockers got nine apiece from Wilford and Strand, seven from Gonzales and Leggett and five from
Maddie Wilson. WSU hit .202 to .132 for Memphis.
Annalie Heliste led the Shockers with 21 digs, while Abigail Schlueter for Memphis finished with 34 and Hannah Jones logged a match-best 21 kills.
The Shockers are back in action on Sunday afternoon against UAB. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
