The Wichita State women's tennis team is set for a weekend road doubleheader against the Creighton Blue Jays on January 20 at 3:00 PM, followed by a match the next day against the Drake Bulldogs at 1:00 PM.
 
SHOCKER NOTES
  • The Shockers enter the weekend 0-1 after opening the year with a 1-6 loss on the road at #13 Oklahoma.
  • Wichita State is 3-7 in their last ten road matches dating back to last season.
  • The Shockers were 11-3 against unranked opponents last season.
  • Last season, WSU was 4-3 in Saturday matches and 3-2 in Sunday matches.
  • The Shockers went 4-8 in true road matches last season.
  • In the Colin Foster era (since 2009), the Shockers are now 87-81 in road contests.
SERIES HISTORY VS CREIGHTON
  • The Shockers are 31-2 all-time against former Missouri Valley Conference opponent, Creighton.
  • WSU has won 18 consecutive matches in the series dating back to Apr. 2, 2004.
  • The Shockers are a perfect 13-0 at Creighton all-time.
  • This will be the first time the teams have met in Omaha since Feb. 26, 2012.
  • Creighton's pair of wins in the series have come on Apr. 2, 2004, and Apr. 9, 2000, both in Wichita.
LAST TIME VS CREIGHTON
  • Last year against the Blue Jays, the then #71 Shockers (12-9) defeated Creighton (16-6) 4-1 at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita.
  • The Shockers clinched the doubles point with a victory at #1 doubles by Jessica Anzo and Kristina Kudryavtseva and a win by the duo Natsumi Kurahashi and LingWei Kong at #2 doubles.
  • In singles, Kudryavtseva, Theodora Chantava, and Harriet Hamilton collected wins at courts four, five, and six to clinch the match for the Shockers.
  • Creighton's Shukla Malvika collected the lone Blue Jay point of the match at #1 singles with a three-set defeat of Wong.
CREIGHTON SCOUTING
  • The Blue Jays are led by long-time Head Coach Tom Lilly who is in his 34th season leading the Creighton program.
  • This match will be Creighton's 2024 season opener.
  • Creighton enters the 2024 season off a 2023 campaign where they finished 17-8 and 4-2 in Big East play.
  • Last year, Shukla led the team in singles wins with 16, followed by Ana Paula Martinez with 12.
  • The duo of Martinez and Valerie Negin compiled the most doubles wins last season with 15.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS DRAKE
  • This will be the 54th all-time meeting between Drake and Wichita State with the Shockers holding the edge in the series 31-23.
  • WSU won 17 consecutive matches over Drake between 2006 and 2021 before Drake broke the drought with a 4-2 win on January 29, 2022, in Des Moines.
  • WSU is 11-11 against the Bulldogs when playing at Drake.
  • The former MVC foes have played at least once every year since 1983 except for 2018 and 2020.
LAST TIME VS DRAKE
  • In last year's meeting on January 28, the Shockers (2-1) collected a 5-2 home victory against the Bulldogs (2-2)
  • Shockers duos of Kong/Kurahashi and Hamilton/Clara Whitaker gave the Shockers the doubles point and a victory by Hamilton at singles court six clinched the match for WSU.
  • Additionally, Kong, Kurahashi, and former Shocker Marlene Forster collected singles wins at courts three, two, and five, respectively.
  • Ines Stephani and Elizabete Klavinska collected points for the Bulldogs.
DRAKE SCOUTING
  • Drake is in their second year under Head Coach Breaunna Addison.
  • The Bulldogs went 16-8 last season and won the MVC Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-3 victory over Illinois State in the championship.
  • Drake went a near perfect 9-1 at home last season with the lone loss coming against Iowa State in Drake's season opener.
LAST MATCH
  • The Shockers were blitzed on the road at #13 Oklahoma in a 1-6 defeat.
  • Shocker freshman Anne Knuettel recorded the Shockers only point with a win at #5 singles.
  • All three Shocker freshmen (Knuettel, Giorgia Roselli, Xin Tong Wang) appeared in the singles lineup against OU.
NEXT UP
The Shockers return home to play their first home match of the season on January 26 at 4:00 PM against Kansas State at Wichita Country Club.
