CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Wichita State rolled to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-13 sweep of Illinois State on Saturday afternoon at Huff Hall, WSU's first straight sets victory of the 2023 season.
For a second straight day, the Shockers (3-2) dominated defensively. Illinois State was limited to a .087 hitting percentage, as no individual Redbird managed more than five kills. The third set was the highlight of the afternoon, as WSU forced Illinois State into eight attack errors and a .000 hitting percentage while hitting a staggering .632 themselves.
Sophia Rohling capped off a dominant weekend with 10 kills on just 16 attempts, hitting .500 in addition to a career-high seven digs.
Natalie Foster,
Emerson Wilford and
Morgan Stout each added seven kills and each avoided making an attack error, helping Wichita State finish with a .316 hitting percentage on the day. Defensively,
Morgan Weber led the Shockers with 13 digs, her second consecutive double-digit dig performance.
The Shockers convincingly won the battle of serve and pass, firing eight aces while committing just four errors. Illinois State had four aces and seven errors.
Illinois State (0-5) hung around in the opening set, at one point trimming Wichita State's early lead to 17-16 following a kill from Cassie Jordan. But the Shockers responded with a devastating 8-1 run to close the set, capped off by a kill and block from Rohling. The senior opposite finished the set with six kills on nine swings to power the WSU attack.
The Shockers parlayed the momentum from the end of set one into the second. A key 5-1 run midway through the frame created separation at 17-11, then
Gabi Maas did the rest with an excellent service run that included two aces and finished with the Shockers in front 24-13. A bad set from Illinois State one point later gave Wichita State a 2-0 advantage heading to the intermission.
Wichita State left no doubt in a thorough third set performance. Early bursts at the service line from
Annalie Heliste and Foster staked the Shockers to a quick 7-2 lead; the Redbirds final gasp pulled them within 11-9, but WSU responded with a 6-0 run to restore the cushion. In a microcosm of the weekend, Wichita State got multiple kills from five different players in the set.
The Shockers carry their three-match winning streak into the Shocker Volleyball Classic at Charles Koch Arena next week. Wichita State opens the competition against #23-ranked Kansas on Thursday night, with first serve in the home opener scheduled for 7:00 pm.Â
