Shockers Collect PRs, Place Third in Lincoln

9/16/2023 3:13:00 PM

LINCOLN, Neb. – Every Wichita State runner who ran at the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational recorded a personal-best time on their way to third-place team finishes in the red division Saturday at the Mahoney Park Golf Course.

"It was a pretty strong performance," head coach Kirk Hunter said. "I'm happy for the kids who got their personal records, and I do believe that there were some significant improvements, and now I have to evaluate where we really stand."

Lucy Ndungu placed third in the red division (Division I schools) 5K race with another big personal best, running 17:19.67 to lead the women to a third-place team finish. Miranda Dick (8th; 17:36.51) and Lubna Aldulaimi (13th; 17:52.34) also ran sub-18 minutes to place top 15, and Jenna Muma placed 18th with a time of 18:07.56. Freshman Isabelle Hartnett ran her first race in uniform in her return to her home state and rounded out the Shockers' top five with a time of 18:14.40.

With a handful of athletes not racing this week in preparation for the Notre Dame Invitational, junior transfer Zander Cobb led the Shocker men to a third-place team finish, placing eighth in the red division 8K with a time of 24:24.86. Cesar Ramirez (15th; 24:45.98), Iestyn Williams (16th; 24:52.23) and Aidan Reyna (17th; 24:57.34) all recorded top-20 finishes, and Riley Vandaveer finished 47th in his first 8K race.

"When you only have five guys, and you leave a lot of your guys home, you're in the hole already," Hunter said. "You're up against a mountain there, but I thought the guys that ran did a good job. They may not have executed the plan perfectly throughout the entire race, but they came out of it and ended up racing well at the end."

The Shocker men scored 97 points, and the women tallied 66 points, as Kansas (29 points) claimed the men's team title and Iowa State (52 points) won it for the women.

The Shockers are back in action Friday, Sept. 29 for the Gans Creek Classic and the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.
