WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State held Oklahoma to a .041 hitting percentage, including three sets below .000, as the Shockers rallied for a 25-12, 20-25, 23-25, 25-11, 15-9 exhibition win on Thursday night at Charles Koch Arena.Â
The Shockers forced the Sooners into 37 attack errors for the match, including 10 in the fourth set alone. Wichita State did not trail in the fourth, racing out to a quick 9-3 lead that eventually ballooned to 23-8. WSU notched a match-best four blocks in the frame and got three aces, two from setter
Izzi Strand. After clinching the fourth set to even up the match at 2-2, the Shockers seized command of set five with a 4-0 burst out of the gate. Oklahoma whittled the lead to 4-3 but would get no closer, as WSU used three clutch kills from
Emerson Wilford to pull away. The Sooners made one last gasp, rattling off three points in a row to crawl within 13-9, but a kill from
Natalie Foster and a Taylor Preston attack error secured the victory for Wichita State.
Five Shockers had five or more kills on the night, led by
Morgan Stout with nine. Foster and Wilford contributed eight apiece, while
Brylee Kelly chipped in seven and Strand five. Strand also dished out 32 assists and logged four of WSU's seven aces. Wichita State won the battle at the service line, recording more aces (7-6) and fewer errors (14-18).
All told, Wichita State hit .227 for the match, highlighted by the crucial fourth stanza in which the Shockers did not commit an attack error and hit .476.
