Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Wichita State men's tennis team earned its first win over a ranked opponent this season to snap its six-match losing streak, taking down No. 55 SMU, 4-3, Saturday in Memphis, Tenn. after a 4-1 loss to No. 35 Memphis on Friday.
Â
"Great team win today," head coach
Darragh Glavin said. "We've lost a few close ones recently and had leads we haven't been able to capitalize on in recent matches, so this was great to bounce back after losing a close one to Memphis yesterday and get four singles wins versus a good SMU team."
Â
In match one, the Shockers (10-14) started strong with
Kristof Minarik and
Alex Richards taking down the Tigers' No. 79-ranked doubles tandem of David Stevenson and Jeremy Taylor, 6-2, at court one.
Orel Ovil and
Misha Kvantaliani were also successful at court two, winning 6-3 to give the Shockers the doubles point, but Memphis (11-5) came out and won four singles matches to clinch the match, leaving
Alejandro Jacome's and
Luke Bracks' matches unfinished.
Â
In the second match, the Shockers gave up courts one and three in doubles, giving SMU (11-13) the 1-0 advantage. The Mustangs' No. 66-ranked Adam Neff defeated Minarik, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to add to their lead, but Kvantaliani responded with 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2, his fourth win of the season at court two. SMU's Antonio Muniz put the Mustangs in position to clinch with a win at No. 3, but
Luke Bracks and
Alejandro Jacome won their matches at courts six and four, respectively, to tie the match at 3-3.
Â
The pressure to clinch fell on Richards at court five, where he took his match to a third set after dropping the first and came out on top, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, giving the Shockers their first win since Mar. 8.
Â
"We've been playing well and today we were able to get over the line and take a big step forward for this team," Glavin said.
