No. 22 Wichita State Handles Memphis in Five Innings to Win Ninth Straight

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – No. 22 Wichita State was workmanlike against an undermanned Memphis squad in a 10-2 run-rule of the Tigers Friday afternoon.

Wichita State (33-7, 7-1) secured its third straight series win and extended its win streak to nine in a row. The Shockers will go for the series sweep Saturday in the finale.

Sami Hood had a season-high three hits, including a home run and three RBI. The bottom of the lineup combined for 10 of the team's 12 hits on the afternoon. Taylor Sedlacek was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Camryn Compton was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored, Lainee Brown singled twice to go with an RBI and Krystin Nelson singled in two at bats.

Sydney McKinney was the lone Shocker at the top of the order with a hit, going 2-for-2 with two RBI. She moved into a tie for 14th on the NCAA all-time hits list with 351.

After surrendering a two-run home run in the first, Lauren Howell (15-2) allowed just one hit over the final 4.0 innings. Her 15 wins are tops in the American Athletic Conference.

Against a shorthanded Memphis pitching staff, Wichita State jumped on the Tigers with six runs in the top of the first. The Shockers loaded the bases via two walks and a hit by pitch, setting up an RBI opportunity for Hood and Sedlacek. The freshmen delivered with back-to-back singles to put the Shockers up 3-0. Hood would eventually steal home for the fourth run, and RBI's from Brown and McKinney capped a six-run frame.

Memphis got two of those runs back in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run.

Wichita State responded in a way they only know how, with the long ball. Two homers in the inning from Hood and Compton made it 9-2.

After a scoreless third, McKinney extended the lead to 10-2 in the top of the fourth on her second RBI single of the day.
