Shockers Open AAC Tournament Friday

4/18/2023 8:39:00 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Wichita State men's tennis team opens American Athletic Conference Championship play in Friday's quarterfinal as the No. 7 seed.

The Shockers (11-15) are set to take on No. 2 seed Tulane (13-11) Friday at 11 a.m. CT at the USTA National Campus.

The winner advances to play in a semifinal match against either No. 3 UCF or No. 6 South Florida.

The last time the Shockers won an AAC tournament match was in 2021 when they took down Memphis to advance to the semifinal. Orel Ovil is the lone Shocker remaining from that team, which earned a bid to the NCAA Championships.

This will be the Shockers' first look at the No. 43-ranked Green Wave this season as WSU is 1-4 in series history, winning the neutral site match a year ago, 4-3.

Alejandro Jacome is on a three-match win streak after defeating his Temple opponent on the USTA National Campus courts and leads the Shockers with 15 singles wins.

WSU's doubles woes continued against Temple as they have won just 10 of the 26 doubles points this season, although one of those points came against No. 35 Memphis.

Rafael de Alba leads Tulane in singles wins with a record of 14-5, with 11 of those wins coming at court six.

Wichita State's Kristof Minarik and Alex Richards (9-6) are likely to face the Green Wave's Charlie Barry and Benji Jackson (6-5) at court one.
