Shocker Offense Silenced in Midweek Loss

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Four Kansas pitchers held Wichita State to five hits as the Jayhawks shut out the Shockers 4-0 on Wednesday evening at Hoglund Ballpark.

Ethan Bradford (1-1) went the first 5.1 innings to earn the win, striking out four while walking one and allowing two hits. Thaniel Trumper got a pair of outs to end the sixth, then Stone Hewlett worked the next 2.1 before Kolby Dougan retired the final two hitters to end it.

All the offense in the game came on two swings. The Jayhawks (7-4) got a three-run homer from Jake English in the bottom of the second and a solo home run from Janson Reeder in the bottom of the fourth that produced the final margin. Both long balls came against Wichita State starter Cameron Bye (0-2), who struck out four over four innings. The WSU bullpen was excellent, as Michael Mulhollon, Matt Wilkinson and Nate Snead fanned seven over four spotless innings, allowing only a trio of singles combined.

The Shockers had a pair of scoring opportunities late in the game, both of which were thwarted by double plays. In the seventh, Payton Tolle singled and Alex Birge coaxed a one-out walk. Chuck Ingram followed with a hard smash to shortstop that turned into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

The eighth inning started with a Seth Stroh walk and consecutive one-out singles from Brock Rodden and David Herring to load the bases for Garrett Pennington. Hewlett induced a tap back to the mound that resulted in a 1-2-3 double play, turning aside WSU's best scoring threat of the day.

Kyte McDonald had Wichita State's lone extra-base hit of the day with a third inning double, while Birge walked twice.

The Shockers are back home at Eck Stadium this weekend for a three-game series against Stetson. First pitch of Friday's series opener is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
