Shockers Blast UMass, Secure Series Win

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State needed just seven innings to run-rule UMass for a second straight day, defeating the Minutemen by an identical 12-2 score on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

The Shockers powered up for a season-high five home runs, including two from Brock Rodden, and eight total extra-base hits, hanging four runs on the board in the top of the first and cruising the rest of the way. Chuck Ingram set the tone with a solo home run on the third pitch of the first inning, his second long ball in as many days. After a Garrett Pennington double, Payton Tolle crushed an opposite-field, two-run homer for a quick 3-0 lead. Mauricio Millan followed a double of his own, and Kyte McDonald knocked him in with a two-out RBI single.

That was plenty of support for Tolle (5-0), who allowed just two hits over six strong innings to earn the win. He gave up a solo home run to Nolan Tichy in the top of the second but then retired 12 in a row from the end of the second into the sixth. The big lefty struck out six and walked two.

Rodden slammed his first homer of the day in the bottom of the fourth, a two-run blast to the gap in right center. He was back at it again with a solo shot in the sixth, the first of back-to-back homers after Garrett Pennington skied a ball just over the wall down the left field line.

Wichita State (12-10) activated the run-rule with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Seth Stroh sliced a two-run single to left, and one batter later a wild pitch scored Kyte McDonald to make it 11-2. The Shockers won the game when UMass threw the ball away after trapping Stroh in a rundown between third and home, the third error of the day for the Minutemen.

Taylor Perrett (1-3) took the loss for UMass, lasting just one inning while allowing four runs.

Robert Cranz worked the seventh in relief for Wichita State, pitching around a pair of baserunners to post a zero.

The Shockers will look to sweep the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
