Shockers Roll Past Sooners

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State used three multi-run innings, a great start from Caden Favors, four hits from Chuck Ingram and 3.1 innings of hitless relief from Jace Miner to knock off Oklahoma 6-2 on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.

The Shockers (9-7) got the scoring started right away, striking for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first after Favors stranded the bases loaded in the top half. Brock Rodden led off with a double, moved to third on a David Herring sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Payton Tolle RBI groundout. Wichita State added a second run in the inning on an Oklahoma passed ball, allowing Garrett Pennington to score for a 2-0 lead.

Favors (2-1) kept that lead intact by inducing crucial double plays in both the second and third innings. In the fourth, the Shockers doubled their advantage via a pair of two-out RBI singles, one from Ingram and another from Herring that stretched the lead to 4-0. Favors capped his evening by breezing through the Sooners (11-6) in the fifth, his first 1-2-3 inning of the night.

Oklahoma's only runs came in the sixth on a pair of two-out singles of their own, courtesy of Rocco Garza-Gongora and Diego Muniz that sliced the lead to 4-2. Miner entered with two runners aboard and walked the first man he faced, but then retired 10 in a row to secure his first career save.

Ingram restored Wichita State's four-run lead with a monster two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, his second long ball of the season. Ingram finished 4-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

Miner capped off the victory with a flourish, striking out the side in the ninth to give the Shockers consecutive wins over the Sooners dating back to last season.

Carson Atwood (0-2) took the loss for Oklahoma, allowing two runs in his lone inning of work.

The Shockers are scheduled to return to action on Friday at Creighton. First pitch from Omaha is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
