Asinde, Colbert Overpower Tulane in Home Win

WICHITA, Kan. – Jane Asinde and Trajata Colbert both recorded 20-10 double-doubles in a 69-61 win over Tulane Thursday night in Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State (14-10, 4-7) led for all but 2:01 in the game, snapping a two-game skid in the process.

Asinde scored a team-high 22 points to go with 11 rebounds and four steals. It's her ninth double-double of the season and third in her last four games. Asinde set career highs at the free throw line, going 12-for-13.

Colbert continued her strong play of late with 20 points and 10 rebounds – her third straight double-double and sixth of the season. DJ McCarty chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Wichita State was just 1-for-11 from beyond the arc, but made up for it at the free throw line where they were a season-best 24-of-27. The duo of Asinde and Colbert were a combined 18-for-19. Tulane on the other hand went to the line only nine times.

The other key to the win was turnovers and rebounding. Wichita State committed only seven and won the battle of the boards, 42-33.

Tulane's Dynah Jones scored a game-high 23 points.

Behind an early 8-0 run, Wichita State grabbed a 10-5 advantage in the opening minutes, and would maintain a lead at the end of the first, 16-14. Asinde and Colbert scored six each to combine for 12 of the team's 16 first quarter points.

Midway through the second Wichita State used a 12-2 spurt to grab its largest lead, 28-18. McCarty and Colbert did a bulk of the damage, scoring eight of those 12 points.

The two teams traded baskets over the final 4:32 until a last second Shamaryah Duncan three-pointer in the final seconds gave Wichita State a 38-25 lead at the half. Duncan's triple was the only one the Shockers hit in the half, going 1-for-5, but Wichita State shot 47 percent overall.

Wichita State outscored Tulane in the second quarter, 22-11. The Shockers were able to build a comfortable lead behind only two turnovers, 22 points in the paint and holding Tulane to just 9-of-28 from the floor.

Colbert led all scorers with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, followed by McCarty with eight and Asinde with six.

Tulane came out of the locker room and immediately cut the lead to single digits behind seven straight points. Wichita State would manage to hold the lead in the 7-10 range for the remainder of the quarter.

A Tulane floater from Kahia Warmsley just before the buzzer sent Wichita State into the final frame leading, 50-43.

The Green Wave pulled within six at the 6:11 mark, only to see Wichita State score on back-to-back possessions from Asinde and Duncan.

Tulane could never pull together enough stops down the stretch, as Wichita State closed it out at the free throw line. The Shockers scored their final seven points at the stripe.
