DALLAS – SMU outscored Wichita State by 11 in the second half to take down Wichita State, 69-51, Wednesday night in Moody Coliseum.
Wichita State (15-12, 5-9) shot below 40 percent from the field, including 3-of-11 from beyond the arc and was outrebounded by 15. Wichita State's minus-15 on the glass was a season worst.
Jane Asinde and
Curtessia Dean scored a team-high tying 11 points each, followed by
Trajata Colbert and
DJ McCarty with 10 apiece.
SMU finished the game shooting 47.6 percent from the field, despite missing 17-of-20 from beyond the arc. That 47.6 percent was a season high given up by Wichita State's defense.
Wichita State converted on its first six shots to open the game, but finished the quarter 1-of-6 and found themselves trailing SMU, 24-16, after 10 minutes. The Mustangs closed the period on a 8-1 run, capped by a coast-to-coast buzzer beating floater by Jasmine Smith.
SMU upped its lead to double digits late in the second quarter behind a 6-0 spurt, forcing a Wichita State timeout. Colbert would score Wichita State's last five points of the half, including a last second layup to pull the Shockers within, 38-31, at the break.
Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, as the two squads basically got whatever they wanted near the rim. SMU shot 52 percent despite missing all 10 of its three-point attempts.
Wichita State committed 10 first half turnovers, which led to 12 SMU points the other way.
The majority of Wichita State's first half points came from the combination of Colbert (10), McCarty (10) and Dean (7). The rest of the team combined for four points.
Eight straight points to open the second half gave SMU its largest lead, 46-31. Wichita State would answer with its own 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to eight with less than 4:00 minutes to go in the third.
Just when it looked like the Shockers were building some momentum and getting back into it, SMU scored the final eight points of the period behind back-to-back triples. The Mustangs led 56-40 after 30 minutes.
The Mustangs outscored Wichita State 18-9 in the third quarter.
On the opening possession of the fourth quarter SMU cashed in a three-pointer, effectively putting the game away. They would lead by as many as 22 in the final 10 minutes.
