Shockers Falter Against North Texas

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State let a 2-0 lead slip away late, falling to North Texas 25-19, 25-16, 20-25, 23-25, 11-15 on Saturday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers (17-7, 11-3) took the first two sets rather easily, holding North Texas to hitting percentages of .150 and -.118 to take a commanding lead into the intermission. But the Mean Green (15-12, 9-5) burst out of the gates in the third set with a 5-0 advantage; Wichita State eventually rallied to take their first lead of the set at 19-18, but it proved short lived as North Texas scored the next five points and seven of the final eight in the set.

Wichita State's best chance to end the match came in the fourth, when WSU held a 20-15 lead following a kill from Natalie Foster. The Mean Green struck back with three straight points to shrink the advantage to two, then scored four straight points to erase Wichita State's 23-21 edge.

The Shockers claimed the first three points of the fifth set, but another North Texas run turned the tide. The Mean Green rattled off five quick points to take a 5-3 lead they held the rest of the way. WSU's last surge pulled them within 9-8, but four straight Mean Green points made the deficit nearly insurmountable. A blocking error on the final point secured the reverse sweep for North Texas.

Wichita State out-hit the Mean Green .185 to .161, but North Texas hit .343 and .412 over the final two sets to complete the comeback. Treyaunna Rush led all scorers with 17 kills for North Texas, while Foster paced the Shockers with 13 terminations. Izzi Strand handed out 45 assists and Gabi Maas spearheaded the defensive effort with 17 digs. The Shockers teamed up for 12 blocks, including two solo and four assists from Morgan Stout, who also hit .474 on her 10 kills.

The Shockers continue the homestand with a pair of matches next week against UTSA. First serve of the series opener at Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
