CONWAY, S.C. – Liberty cashed in 14 three-pointers and Kyle Rode poured in 31 points to lead the Flames in an 83-66 win over Wichita State in the Myrtle Beach Invitational semifinals.
Wichita State (4-1) closes out the Myrtle Beach Invitational on Sunday in the third place game vs. Saint Louis at 7 p.m. CDT on ESPN2.
Xavier Bell went for a career-high 24, marking the second straight game with 20-plus. He was 8-for-17 from the field and 8-for-10 from the line, while grabbing a career-high nine rebounds.
Colby Rogers added 16 but was just 6-for-18 from the field.
Dalen Ridgnal grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Shockers had no answer all night for Rode who dropped seven three-pointers for a game-high 31 points.
Both teams shot 42 percent but the game was decided behind the three-point line where the Flames outscored the Shockers by 36. Wichita State was just 2-for-14 from beyond the arc after back-to-back games with 10 or more.
Wichita State shot out to a 13-5 lead behind seven early points from
Harlond Beverly, but Liberty mounted an 10-2 run behind a pair of three-pointers to tie it at 15 with 11:48 to go in the first half.
Two Bell free throws and a three-point play for
Quincy Ballard made it 24-19 with 7:16 left in the half. Over the next 3:21, Liberty put together a 16-2 run to take a 35-26 lead, forcing a Wichita State timeout.
The Flames pushed the margin to 11 only to watch Rogers singlehandedly pull the Shockers back in it. Rogers went on a personal 8-0 run to make it 39-36 at the half.
Bell and Rogers scored 10 apiece in the first half, combining for 20 of the team's 36 points.
Both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field, but Liberty was plus-15 behind the three-point line. The Flames were 7-of-19 compared to Wichita State's 2-for-10.
The second half began with Wichita State making it a two-point game only to see Liberty knock down a trio of triples, mounting a 12-2 run. The Flames grabbed their largest lead, 54-42, forcing a Shocker timeout with 14:48 remaining.
Out of the timeout Wichita State punched right back with a 10-0 run spearheaded by Bell and Rogers to pull within two at the 11:00 minute mark.
The game of runs continued its trend with Liberty seizing back momentum to grab a 62-52 lead with 6:58 left. From there they would put the game away, leading by as many as 19 in the final minutes.
