BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Wichita State battled back from an early deficit to force a fifth set but allowed three crucial aces in the deciding frame and saw their seven-match winning streak come to an end with a 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10 loss to Florida Atlantic on Friday night.
It was a back-and-forth opening set that was level at 23-23 following a kill from
Morgan Weber, but the Owls (14-10, 6-5) got consecutive kills from Valeria Rosado and Katelynn Robine to snag a 25-23 win. Rosado went on to record a match-best 24 kills at a .296 clip, helping the Owls hit .235 against the Shockers stingy defense.
It was the Shockers (15-6, 9-2) who pulled away late in set two. Florida Atlantic held a 20-18 lead late in the stanza, but Wichita State rattled off seven of the next eight points to even the match with a 25-21 win.
Sophia Rohling was the star down the stretch, striking for a pair of kills and two blocks.
It appeared as though the Shockers would seize command when WSU ran out to a quick 8-2 lead in the third. But the Owls quickly pulled even at 12-12 and did not allow Wichita State to retake the lead. WSU forced a late Florida Atlantic timeout after a rally cut the Owls edge to 22-20, but FAU struck back with two quick points and later a Kaila Ru termination to take a 2-1 lead after three.
The Shockers controlled the fourth set largely due to the efforts of
Morgan Stout, who scored seven points in the set on four kills, two solo blocks and two block assists. The redshirt junior was spectacular in the middle stage of the set, helping WSU stretch what was a 15-12 lead to 23-16 with three kills and two blocks. A
Katie Galligan ace set up set point and two points later Arianna Beckham misfired on a swing from the right side, knotting the match at two sets apiece.
Wichita State stumbled out of the gates in set five and did not recover. Florida Atlantic scored five of the first six points and WSU could not claw back within three the rest of the way. FAU hit .526 without an error in the decisive set and had three aces, eventually clinching the match on Rosado's 24th kill.
Emerson Wilford led the Shockers with 15 kills to go along with 10 digs, while
Natalie Foster contributed 14 terminations and Rohling added 11.
Izzi Strand handed out 51 assists and
Gabi Maas piled up 20 digs.
Wichita State is back in action on Sunday afternoon at Memphis. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
