WICHITA, Kan. -- Sophia Rohling led another balanced attack with 18 kills, and Wichita State battled past Tulsa 25-13, 17-25, 25-14, 25-22 on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena.
The victory is the sixth in a row for Wichita State and the 11
th in the last 12 matches.
It was a mixture of two dominant sets and two dogfights for the Shockers (14-5, 8-1), who came out of the gates in set one with a commanding 11-3 lead that forced a quick Tulsa timeout. Wichita State continued to side out at 71% in the set, never allowing Tulsa to get closer than seven points in the frame. In a precursor of things to come, the Shockers had six players with multiple kills, paced by four from setter
Izzi Strand. WSU did not commit a serve error in the set and picked up three blocks in the comfortable victory.
Tulsa (11-10, 4-6) fended off every attempt at a WSU rally in set two. The Golden Hurricane seized an early 6-2 lead and kept the Shockers at arm's length thanks to the tandem of Beth Bayless and Kayley Cassaday, who each notched five kills in the set. Wichita State went on a pair of 3-0 runs to trim the deficit back to four at 18-14, but the Golden Hurricane responded with a 4-0 run of their own to reestablish control. Another 3-0 burst capped off by a Lauren Eitler service ace knotted the match at one set apiece.
Rohling began to take over in the third set, powering up to the tune of seven kills, helping Wichita State pull away in the middle stages of a back-and-forth stanza. With the Shockers lead at just 11-10, Rohling put the finishing touches on a decisive 6-1 run with a kill and a block, putting the Shockers in command at 17-11. Two kills and a service ace from
Emerson Wilford down the stretch put Wichita State back in front with a comfortable 25-14 win.
The fourth set was anything but comfortable, as the two teams traded the lead 11 times and had four ties. A Tulsa service ace from Marta Pecalli leveled the ledger at 16-16, but Wichita State scored four of the next five points for a 20-17 advantage. Rohling and Kelly were instrumental during the closing push, each powering home five kills in the set. WSU reached match point at 24-19, but three straight kills from Cassaday forced a WSU timeout with the lead chopped to 24-22. Out of the break, Rohling slammed home her 18th termination of the match to secure the victory.
Strand helped the Shockers to a .289 team hitting percentage with 46 assists, adding 11 digs and six kills. Six different Shockers had six or more kills, with Kelly at 12 and both
Natalie Foster and Wilford at nine apiece.
Gabi Maas and
Morgan Weber were sensational defensively, recording 21 and 14 digs, respectively.
The Shockers and Golden Hurricane tangle again in the second match of the series on Saturday night. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
