DALLAS -- Two days after a frustrating sweep at the hands of conference-leading SMU, Wichita State responded with a thrilling 25-13, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23 win on Sunday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
The Shockers (9-5, 3-1) handed SMU (10-6, 4-1) their first conference loss and first home loss of the season.
Junior outside hitter
Barbara Koehler took over the match down the stretch, delivering a monumental final set. The Brazilian had seven kills in the frame without committing an error on 15 attempts, hitting .467 on her way to a career-best 15 kills. She helped the Shockers erase a 20-14 deficit with a 7-0 run, then scored four of WSU's final five points to close it out. With the score tied 21-21, Koehler made two improbable saves on balls heading out of play, then capped the rally by tooling the block for a kill. Kills from
Natalie Foster and Koehler gave Wichita State match point at 24-21, but the Mustangs scored two quick points to draw within 24-23. On the ensuing serve, a perfect pass from
Annalie Heliste got the Shockers in system, and
Izzi Strand's ball out left allowed Koehler to hammer off the block for the match-winning kill.
The heart-stopping finish came after the Shockers dominated the opening frame, blitzing SMU with a 6-1 run in the middle stages of the frame to take a commanding 19-11 lead. WSU put the set away with a 5-0 run, capped by another Koehler kill. Wichita State hit .375 for the set and held the Mustangs to an .059 clip.
The Shockers kept SMU at arm's length in the second set, trading points to keep the lead between three and four for much of the stanza. SMU cut the lead down to two at 19-17, 20-18, 21-19, 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22, but Wichita State had the answer each time.
Brylee Kelly's clutch kill got the Shockers to set point, and a Jamison Wheeler attack error on the following swing got WSU to the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Sophia Rohling starred in the set for the Shockers, terminating five times on six attempts.
With the Shockers eyeing a sweep, the third set developed into a tight back-and-forth battle. SMU's early 11-7 lead was trimmed to one on eight different occasions, but it wasn't until a block from Kelly and
Morgan Stout that the Shockers finally drew level at 21-21. SMU reached set point with a 24-22 lead via a kill from Emma Clothier, but WSU leveled the score on a Kelly kill followed by another block. The Mustangs finally pulled away for good on a service error and a Clothier ace, setting the stage for the fourth set drama.
Wichita State hit .308 to SMU's .188, out-blocking the Mustangs 11.0-8.0 and out-digging them 70-61. Four different Shockers had double-digit kills, led by Koehler's 15. Rohling had 14 while hitting .500, Kelly delivered 13 and Foster powered home 10, resulting in 45 assists for Strand.
Defensively, libero
Gabi Maas turned in perhaps her best match as a Shocker with a team-high 18 digs. Koehler produced 17 for a double-double, and
Morgan Weber joined the party with 14 ups of her own. Stout finished with a match-best eight block assists.
Wichita State returns home next week to battle Temple on Friday night. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
