Shockers Split Sunday Matches in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Wichita State men's tennis team split its doubleheader, sweeping Bryant, 5-0, and falling to Arizona State, 4-1, Sunday at the Kiwanis Tennis Center.

"Good matches today and overall this week," head coach Darragh Glavin said. "We got better each match we played."

Alejandro Jacome went undefeated in singles in his Shocker debut weekend, collecting three wins at court four and one at three, just over a week after moving to Wichita.

"Alejandro going 4-0 in singles in his first weekend of college tennis against tough opponents was great to see," Glavin said. "He played tough and competed hard, and I know he will continue to improve and do great things here at Wichita State."

The Shockers (2-2) swept Bryant (0-3) after the match was delayed four hours due to rain.

Misha Kvantaliani and Richey King shut out their doubles opponents and Kristof Minarik and Alex Richards moved to 2-1 as a pair to clinch the doubles point for Wichita State.

The Shockers made quick work of the Bulldogs in singles, sweeping at courts three through six, with Jacome clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3.

Wichita State had a short rest period before moving on to play Arizona State (2-0) on its home courts. The Sun Devils clinched the doubles point with wins at two and three, but Minarik and Richards were one point away from their third doubles win when they were cut off.

The Shockers battled on all six courts, making the Sun Devils work for their win. Minarik and Kvantaliani came back from first-set losses at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, to prolong the match.

Richards and Luke Bracks fell at courts three and five, but Jacome picked up his fourth singles victory of the weekend at No. 4 to put the Shockers on the board, just before Kvantaliani ultimately lost the fight at No. 2, ending the match.

"We were right there with Arizona State," Glavin said. "We had chances on all courts and pushed them to the end."

The Shockers will have four days off before hitting the road again for a dual with the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Ark. on Friday, Jan. 20.

"We learned and grew a lot as a team this week, and we are looking forward to our match at Arkansas next week," Glavin said.
