Wichita State Falls in Extra Innings, Ending Win Streak

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 21 UCF scored two runs in the top of the eighth to steal a 3-1 win vs. Wichita State Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.

Wichita State (32-14, 14-3) went to extra innings for the first time this season, while seeing its 12-game win streak come to an end. With the win, UCF (43-12, 15-2) clinched at least a share of the regular season championship, but a Wichita State win on Sunday would make them co-champions and give the Shockers the top seed in next week's conference tournament.

The Shockers' high-powered offense managed just five hits on the afternoon with two of those coming from Sydney McKinney. Zoe Jones drove in the lone run, while finishing 1-for-4.

Caitlin Bingham (12-4) suffered the tough luck loss, pitching all 8.0 innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits and a single walk.

A second inning solo home run gave the Knights the early 1-0 lead. Wichita State would bring the equalizing run across in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout from Jones. The Shockers would only get the one run after loading the bases with just one out.

Neither team could collect a timely hit to until the Knights loaded the bases in the top of the eighth following a pair of Wichita State fielding blunders. With one out, Kennedy Searcy drove in the go-ahead runs on a single to right to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the eighth Lauren Lucas drew a one-out walk, but the very next batter, Jones, hit into a game-ending, 1-4-3 double play.
