Shockers Season Ends With Defeat to UCF

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Wichita State saw their season end Wednesday night with a 12-4 defeat to UCF at BayCare Ballpark.

The Shockers finish the season with a record of 21-36.

Wichita State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from Jordan Rogers, but the Knights scored one of their own in the bottom of the inning and five more in the second to grab control. Three UCF hitters recorded RBI singles in the inning to knock out Wichita State starter Cameron Bye (5-2) who lasted just 1.2 innings.

A bases-loaded walk from Garrett Kocis followed by a wild pitch brought the Shockers back to within 6-3, but UCF poured in one in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Rudy Gomez (5-0) pitched very well in relief to earn the win for the Knights, striking out six over 4.2 innings while allowing just one run. He replaced UCF starter Connor Staine, who was tagged for three hits and three runs in 2.1 frames.

Brock Rodden led the Shockers with a pair of hits and a run scored, while Rogers, Kocis and Thornhill notched RBI.

Jace Miner, Creighton Hansen, Robert Cranz and Will Stevens worked in relief for Wichita State.

UCF advances in the loser's bracket and will play on Friday against the loser of the Memphis-Houston game.
