WICHITA, Kan. –Â
Connor Holden allowed just one hit over four innings of relief to secure his sixth save, and Wichita State completed their first-ever sweep of Tulane with a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Holden entered in the sixth with a 4-2 advantage. He allowed a solo home run to Jackson Linn on his fifth pitch that cut the lead to 4-3, but then retired the final 11 hitters he faced with four strikeouts along the way. The four innings matched the longest relief appearance of the season for Holden, who improved his season strikeout-to-walk ratio to 36:1.
Wichita State (19-32) did all their damage in the first two innings, chasing Tulane starter Chandler Welch (4-3) after just five outs were recorded.
Jordan Rogers got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly, which
Brock Rodden duplicated in the second to double the lead to 2-0. One batter later, Rogers lashed a two-out, two-run single to right that plated
Xavier Casserilla and
Seth Stroh for a 4-0 advantage.
The Green Wave (30-22-1) answered back in the top of the third via a two-run homer of the bat of Trevor Minder, but Wichita State starter
Payton Tolle (4-6) righted the ship with a scoreless fourth and fifth to qualify for the win. Stroh kept the lead intact with an impressive running catch deep in right center field to end the fifth, denying Tulane's Bennett Lee of a potential game-tying extra-base hit.
Tulane reliever Michael Massey kept the Green Wave within striking distance, tossing 5.1 innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts. Wichita State got just one runner to second base from the second inning on, getting two runners aboard in the eighth before Tyler Hoffman was able to induce an inning-ending double play.
Holden set the side down in order in the ninth on two fly outs and a ground out, clinching Wichita State's second sweep of American conference foe.
The Shockers play their final home game of the season on Monday night, hosting Oklahoma in a game that was originally scheduled for March 22 before being postponed due to rain. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
