Wichita State Claims Series With Sunday Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Wichita State raced out to 9-0 lead and cruised to a 10-6 win over Memphis on Sunday afternoon at FedExPark.

The Shockers (15-29) did most of their damage with two outs, exploding for five runs in the third inning on the strength of five consecutive two-out hits. With runners at first and second, Brock Rodden chopped a single back through the middle to score Ross Cadena with the game's first run. Sawyre Thornhill followed by slicing a double to the gap in left-center, plating Chuck Ingram for a 2-0 lead. Jordan Rogers scored both Rodden and Thornhill with a solid single into left, doubling the lead to 4-0. Garrett Kocis capped the scoring with a single up the middle on an 0-2 pitch, ballooning the advantage to 5-0.

All five runs came against Memphis starter Blake Wimberley (2-6) who had breezed through the first two innings without allowing a baserunner.

Wichita State kept up the two-out barrage in the fourth, as Rodden smacked a two-run single for a 7-0 lead. Rodden finished the day 3-for-5, capping strong series in which the sophomore went 6-for-13 with four runs scored and four RBI.

Ross Cadena lengthened the lead out to 9-0 with a long two-run homer in the top of the sixth, his first home run of the season.

That proved to be more than enough run support for Wichita State starter Payton Tolle (3-5) who breezed through five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth. The Tigers (20-21) struck for three runs in the inning, but Garrett Kocis immediately pulled one back in the top of the seventh with a solo homer to center that made it 10-3 in favor of the Shockers.

Adam Ketelsen turned in a strong outing from the WSU bullpen with 2.2 scoreless innings, combining with Ryan Stuempfig to carry the seven-run cushion into the ninth. Tigers shortstop Ben Brooks hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin. The home run completed the cycle for Brooks, who entered the day with three extra-base hits on the season.

The Shockers will head to Manhattan on Tuesday for their final road midweek contest of the season, a 6:00 pm matchup at Kansas State.
