The Wichita State women's tennis team took care of Emporia State, 6-1, on a windy Wednesday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
Â
The Shockers played again with only five players and battled 30-mile-per-hour winds (with gusts up to 40 MPH).
Â
They spotted the visiting Hornets a default victories at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles but posted a pair of 6-1 doubles wins and swept matches at Nos. 1-5 singles in straight sets, dropping just nine games along the way.
Â
The dual win was the first for WSU (7-12) since Feb. 18 and snapped an eight-match skid.
Â
"This team has stayed positive throughout a difficult season," head coach
Colin Foster said. "Naturally it's been difficult to go so long without a win, so it was great for everyone to not only get wins but to play well in less-than-ideal conditions."
Â
In between singles and doubles matches, Foster and the Shockers honored assistant coach and 2021 senior Alex Lazarova.
Â
"It was also special to recognize and celebrate Alex, who wasn't able to have a senior day last year." Foster said. "She has been a huge asset to the program as she's transitioned into a coaching role."
Â
WSU closes out the regular season Sunday, Apr. 10 at Kansas City. Match time has been moved back to 2 p.m.
