Shockers Fall to No. 36 Memphis in AAC Quarterfinals

TULSA, Okla. – The Wichita State men's tennis team's season ended with a 1-4 loss to No. 36 Memphis in the American Athletic Conference quarterfinals Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

The match was played indoors due to weather conditions.

The Tigers' No. 29 ranked doubles tandem of David Stevenson and Jeremy Taylor picked up the court one win over Luka Mrsic and Orel Ovil, 6-3, and Memphis clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 to take the early 1-0 lead.

Memphis quickly went up 3-0 with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, but Luka Mrsic and Ray Lo put pressure on the Tigers with set one victories at courts three and six, respectively. After dropping the first set at No. 1, Kristof Minarik battled back in the second set to take the match to a third set, winning 7-6(5). Mrsic's opponent also sent their match to the third set with a 6-4 win in the second set while Lo closed out his second set successfully to put the Shockers on the board. Alex Richards fought hard after a first-set loss and was in position to force a third set with a 5-4 lead in the second, but Pau Fanlo regained control of the match and sent the Tigers to the AAC semifinals with a 7-5 win.

Minarik's and Mrsic's third sets were left unfinished.

"This was not the season we had hoped for," head coach Danny Bryan said. "We will now take some time to reflect on the year and come up with a plan to get better moving forward. I know the guys coming back next year are willing to put in the work to get us back to where we belong."

The Shockers finish the season 12-14, while Memphis improves to 16-6 heading into the semifinals on Saturday.
